So, it turns out the wedding in August is a morning affair. Thus, my evening outfits just won't work. It's a good thing I asked the groom directly, rather than relying on P's information. I need a dress, probably with flowers on. Likely candidate is this one from Simplicity. Now, I've been clothes shopping recently. I'm a size 20/22. According the the sizing chart of these patterns, though, I'm a 28/30! Wtf. When my clothes size is a higher number than my age, it's time for stomach stapling. Obviously these are just weeord Mirkin sizes. Damn Mirkins with their Size 0.

Also, have you checked out Icanhascheezburger lately? Some really good stuff, man. I'm not addicted to Lolcats, I can stop any time. Srsly.

This one looks like our new little Puffkitten*. She is full of naughty and evil. She's very sweet when she's asleep and for about 5 seconds after you get home and she purrs and loves you like she thought you were _never_ coming home to feed her.

*I still can't embed images. I cut&paste the html, like the site says, but it shows up as text on preview. Sigh. I'm obviously Doing It Wrong.

That pattern is quite flattering and the little cardie is cute to. Most dress sizings are ood, I think I am a 16 to 18 with simplicity. I have learned to ignore the numbers and look at the measurements. I would not have thought flowers but something cotton and floaty myself.

Biggie Best ftw!

I like flowers, in reasonable colours and amounts. I am comfortable with my inner Granny. I might also use Seshweshwe, I've always liked it and it would be nice to have an African dress. It might be a bit stiff though, I'll see what the shops have closer to the time.

I would have thought Seshweshwe with a couple of washes would softened up, I would think the dyeing process would make it so hard. I should have bought some dress lengths when I was buying some for our patchwork quilt.

Pretty pattern!

As short_mort says - check the measurements, and remember that they tend to be seriously generous on the seems. I've had problems with Simplicity sizing before; I now regard it as barely even a guideline.

I am not yet girlified enough to comment on the dress stuff, so I'll stick to manly image embedding. I suspect that you need a paid account for it to work.

If you want a simple test of whether you can do it, try the following code:

<img src="url">

where the URL between the quotes is the address of the picture.

To find the URL of a picture to test, you can do the following:
1. Using the Firefox web browser, go to a web page that includes a picture you want to use.
2. Right click the picture and select View Image.
3. You should now see just the picture. The text in the browser's address bar is that picture's URL.
4. Highlight and copy the URL from the address bar and paste it between the "" in the code.

Yet there's a button on the toolbar for picture embedding! Surely if it were dependent on the type of account you have, it would be greyed out or something. I'll try this "code" of yours, though, it would be really useful. It's hard, though, even w_n can't get it right and she's got a PhD!

Fnar indeed, though it's altogether sadder if all one is just "embedding" an image, rather than the real thing. Erm.

The LJ FAQs imply that with a free account you can hotlink (i.e. display images that are located on other websites) but not store the images on LJ itself. My test above uses hotlinking. However some sites prevent hotlinking ("remote loading") of their images and that might be the problem. Background from LJ:

How do I add images to my entries, comments, or profile?

Why don't my images display? What is remote loading?

Another possibility is that your browser prevents hotlinking. WikiP tells us that "Many ad filtering browser tools will restrict this behavior to varying degrees."

Alternatively, it's just the gremlins that live in the interweb, gnawing on the magic sparkle threads. It's surprising how often that's the most reasonable explanation...

hah! They gave me a zooty piece of a paper and loaned me a funny hat, but they never said anything about technical skills.

I normally wear a size 12. When I went to a dress making class and according to my measurements I was a 20/22. So I duly made the garmet at that size and it fell clean off! I resized and resized and it ended up somewhere between a 16 and 18 according to their size... patterns aaargh!

What I have learnt to do now is make up one garment in some cheap fabric test how the sizing works on me. Saves me wasting the good stuff... because the pattern sizes are f**ked up.

I use Vogue patterns a lot and they are truly tiny... but simplicty I think are bigger. So making a dummy run might be a good idea.

The best think I learnt at sewing class was using this stuff (forget what it is called) like iron on but without the iron stuff on the back to trace the pattern. Saves you cutting the pattern out and if you have to resize your pattern is still intact.

Enjoy the sewing :-)

Ah, yes, a mockup. I'm really lazy and don't feel like doubling my work, although I do realise the need. A stitch in time, blah blah. I think with this one I might do a fake one first to see how it goes. I normally trace the pattern onto brown paper and then do all the modifications there.

It would be irritating if the sizes were so way out that making a size 20/22 would actually fit me, as that's a different pattern (FF) to the one the measurements say _should_ fit me (GG). It's annoying that patterns come in different sizes, they should include all the sizes in one pack, dammit.

Morning? Nobody said anything about morning to me! Are you sure?

There had better be coffee, in copious amounts! I'll have a word in a relevant ear (or at least, I hope it's relevant).

Morning

According to the groom-to-be: ceremony at 11, followed by tea and snacks, then lunch thing, then main evening reception with band and stuff. So it looks like an all-day affair. I'm glad I asked, seeing as we didn't actually get an invitation. Lost in the mail, apparently.

Wrt relevant ears: I strongly suspect that a lot of "yes, dear" has been going on, judging by his vagueness as to what's actually happening on the day (and the size and venue of the wedding). But yes, definitely do get some sort of confirmation. It doesn't really matter what time it starts, though, as we're all at the guest house anyway and I assume someone will come bang on the door when P is needed in suit.

I think the groom-to-be is a little confused (I've just found the invitation, which says it's a 2pm start). Better that he turns up too early than too late, I suppose...

Perhaps there's a dress-rehearsal on the day that we don't yet know about?

When confronted with "your other best man didn't know that it was at 11", the response was "umm, maybe it's 2, I dunno! Whatever the invitation says!". So, yes, I would guess the ceremony is at 2 (I don't know where he pulled 11am from. Perhaps it was part of some elaborate practical joke we've just ruined). I don't know if there's a dress rehearsal, he said something about the venue being all booked up.

I think you just better confirm with the bride-to-be, so you can make sure your poor clueless brother is in the right place at the right time :P.
